North Conway Named Most Affordable Ski Destination in the NorthEast

20 11 2012

Article copied from the 2012-2013 Season New Hampshire Winter Guide, published by Salmon Press Newspapers :

“TripAdvisor’s Inaugural Ski Destination Cost Comparison Intex Reveals Top Resorts in U.S. and Canada Where Travelers Can Hit the Slopes and Save. North Conway comes in most affordable in Northeast and #2 in the U.S.

TripAdvisor, the world’s lagest travel review site launched its inaugural TripIndex Ski - a cost comparison of 20 popular ski destinations across the United States and Canada. North Conway, NH was deemed the least expensive ski destination in the Northeast and the second least expensive destination for skiing in the U.S.

TripAdvisor’s TripIndex Ski presents the combined cost of one night’s hotel accommodation, a basic ski rental package, a one-day lift tickets, a local meal and a bottle/glass of beer at top ski destinations. Salt Lake City, Utah came in as the most affordable ski destination, with a total TripIndex Ski cost of $238.58. Yet North Conway scored just over a dollar higher on TripAdvisor’s TripIndex Ski at $239.88, making the price between two top contenders negligible. With a price tag of $746, Vail, Colorado emerged as the priciest ski spot in the country.

“For travelers who are looking for a snowy escape, TripIndex Ski provides an easy way to compare the most popular ski destinations across North America,” said Karen Drake, senior direction of communications at TripAdvisor. “TripIndex Ski is a useful tool for travelers who are looking to get the best bang for their buck this winter season”.

According to TripAdvisor, the TripIndex Ski prices out the following items in each destination : Per night cost of a hotel (between December 2011 and March 2012 within 5 miles of the destination), cost of a lift ticket, cost of a meal (burger and fries from 3 local restaurants on or near the mountain) and cost of an alcoholic drink (domestic beer at 3 local pubs on or near the mountain).

Prices were collected through a variety of research methods, and apply to travel between December 2011 and March 2012. The “basket” of items is representative of the common items many travelers will purchase while on a ski vacation says TripAdvisor.

“It means a lot to us to learn that TripAdvisor, a trusted trip planning resource for travelers, has recognized that North Conway and the surrounding region offers and affordable ski destination,” said Janice Crawford, Executive Direction of the Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce. “With 13 ski resorts and XC centers all offering great skiing and value, skiers need look no further than the Northeast’s most affordable ski destination this winter,” finished Crawford. All of Mt Washington VAlley’s ski resorts are making snow around the clock as temperatures allow and plan to be open for Christmas week (the week between Christmas and New Year). Six out of seven are presently open.”

At Cranmore Mountain Lodge, room rates start from $89 per night for the whole winter season, and we offer many different ski & stay packages options with different ski resorts. You can find all these packages by clicking here.

Winter Snow Play for Non-Skiers

18 11 2011

If skiing is not your cup of tea and you are spending a few days here with friends or family, there are plenty of other “snow sports” and soft adventures in the Mt Washington Valley. Here is a list of things we’ve put together. For most of the activities, we propose a lodging package but we can build a “a la carte” package that will suit your needs.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing at Great Glen Trails

If you can walk, you can snowshoe! Snowshoeing is the best way to discover the Mt Washington Valley, especially when you do it with an experienced guide who can help you get the best out of your winter hike, by sharing local secrets, following wild animal tracks in the snow, discovering snow covered boulders or icy formations along streams and guiding you into the wild. There are many options – clear days call for a hike up Mount Willard for sweeping views into Crawford Notch or a trip up Cathedral Ledge trail and the wonderful views of the valley and mountains. When the weather is less cooperative or the wind is strong and temps are low, there are still wonderful wild places to visit that are more sheltered and yet offer views of a different sort. Kris Ebbeson, your guide, proposes many dates for group hikes, but can also tailor a private hike just for you! She even proposes a unique Moonlight Snowshoe Hike on January 7, 2012. For more information, click here…

Our guests can also snowshoe for FREE on the trails of Great Glen Trails, right at the base of Mt Washington!

Dog Sledding

Muddy Paw Sled Dog kennel is a kennel comprised of 86 dogs, ranging from racing Alaskan Huskies, to Siberians and Malamutes. The kennel focuses of rescuing Alaskan huskies in need of a home, giving them a “job for life”. Their favorite thing to do is share the passion and adventure of dogsledding from the musher’s perspective. Tours aren’t just sitting in the sled and going for a ride, but involve interacting with dogs, and learning aspects of a culture that many people don’t get to experience. The kennel is located in the heart of the White Mountains, minutes from Santa’s Village and about 45 minutes from North Conway. Check our White Mountains Dog Sledding Package!

Tubing

Cranmore’s tubing park is the #1 in the State of New Hampshire. A magic carpet or a handle tow lift bring you up the hill where 10 lanes await you. Tubing is a family friendly activity that requires no special skills or equipment. Tubes are provided as part of your admission price. All ages welcome. Children 42 inches and taller may ride solo; little ones may ride with an adult! We sell 2-hour tickets for the tubing park at a discount price of $20 per person!

Tubing is also available for FREE at Great Glen Trails for our guests!

Mountain Coaster

Try them both! The Mountain Coaster at Cranmore Mountain and the Nor’Easter Mountain Coaster at Attitash Mountain

The Coaster is thousands of feet of twisting, turning fun through the woods! You control your speed so you may take a leisurely ride or get your thrills at speeds up to 25 mph. Children under 3 are not allowed. Must be at least 48 inches to ride alone. We sell 3 rides tickets for the mountain coaster at Cranmore Mountain at a discount price of $20 per person!

You can also try the Nor’Easter Mountain Coaster at Attitash Mountain : The Nor’Easter Mountain Coaster carries riders 1,420 feet up Attitash Mountain on twin, stainless steel rails, providing spectacular views of the White Mountain scenery before descending on a thrilling 2,880 foot ride down through the forested mountain terrain, dropping 316 vertical feet through a series of banked curves, dips and straight-aways at rider-controlled speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. Must be at least 52 inches to ride alone. We sell 1 ride ticket for the Nor’Easter Mountain Coaster at Attitash Mountain at a discount price of $10 per person!

Giant Swing

Giant Swing at Cranmore Mountain

Get the thrill of being launched into the air with the Giant Swing at Cranmore Mountain! Must be at least 42 inches tall and a maximum of 300 lbs.

Indoor Adventure Zone

Cranmore’s  Indoor Adventure Zone features  fun attractions and offers kids of all ages hours of inside fun : a four-station Bungy Trampoline, the Spyder Mountain (a 24-foot tall cylinder that kids can climb up into and a large inflatable slide), and bouncy houses for everyone.

A Canopy Tour at Bretton Woods

Descending over 1000 feet of elevation, the tour takes nature-lovers and thrill-seekers across a series of tree-top zip lines through a network of platforms high in the ancient hemlocks. High-flying suspension bridges and hiking trails connect the nine zip lines, and the tour concludes with the Williwaw Racing Zip, a dual, side-by-side zip line leading right into the Bretton Woods base area!
